A Fan Game inspired by Ao Oni, Nira Oni sees Hiroshi and his friends visiting West Nira Hospital. Although it's supposedly been empty for decades, for some reason, the electricity's still running.. and it isn't long before Hiroshi finds they're not alone. Will any of them make it out alive..?

The download link can be found here.

Nira Oni contains examples of:

  • Abandoned Hospital: West Nira Hospital. Oddly, despite how long ago it was abandoned, there's various flat-screen televisions and computers around.
  • Advertisement:
  • Agent Scully: Hiroshi starts out as one, though he comes to reluctantly admit the existence of the monsters over time.
  • Apocalyptic Log: A few notes of this nature are scattered around West Nira, offering information about the oni. In particular, one reveals it's possible to survive by sacrificing others to it, which causes problems when Takuro finds it first.
  • Anyone Can Die: Depending on which ending you get, it's possible for Mika, Takeshi, Takuro and Cassey to all die.
  • Big Brother Is Watching: The Survelliance Room is filled with computers. Each one covers a different room.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: West Nira is infested with big blue roaches, which prove unnervingly fast when scuttling after you.
  • Bittersweet Ending:
    • In the Normal Ending, Hiroshi, Cassey and Ryan all manage to escape.. but Hiroshi knows that the monsters still got what they wanted, since they successfully killed half of the intruders.
    • Advertisement:
    • In the Bad Ending, Hiroshi makes it out with Ryan, but they're the only survivors.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Each of the cast members has differently colored hair. While Mika and Cassey are both brunettes, they're visibly different shades, and Cassey wears a full white coat to contrast with Mika's Sailor Fuku.
  • Curiosity Killed the Cast: None of the events would've happened if they'd just stayed away from the creepy abandoned hospital..
  • Drop-In Nemesis: The Oni's tendency towards this is actually explained in some notes Hiroshi can find during the Perfect Ending path, implying it has the ability to warp reality. Or by the existence of the secret hallways.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: In order to achieve the best ending possible, Hiroshi really has to go out of his way.
  • Eldritch Location: The Hospital is hinted to have become one. The Warping Corridor lets Hiroshi turn this to his advantage.
  • Advertisement:
  • Eye Scream: The main oni has one of its eyes stitched shut.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Depending on which ending path you're on, Takuro may make one.
  • Failure-to-Save Murder: Potentially with poor Mika.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When one of the others mentions the rumors about the hospital being haunted, Takeshi seems shocked.. even though, as Takuro reminds him, he was the one who suggested they check it out in the first place. Later on, Hiroshi learns Cassey actually suggested it to Takeshi first.
    • Takuro calling Hiroshi out for something he wasn't around to witness, as well as his comments about reading about the monster make more sense on the route to the best ending. You can find his watch in the Surveillance Room, along with the notes he was talking about.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: At one point, you get chased by a Mutant Oni who comes from the room you were just in.
  • Guide Dang It!: Picking up certain items actually prevents you from collecting other, more important items later. The entrance to one area where you can find an item required for the Perfect Ending is hidden Behind the Black. Another requires you evade the Oni long enough to time it out without leaving a certain area (as it gets permanently locked once you do), and others require lots of backtracking.
  • Harmful to Minors: Played with during the opening; after Ryan asks her sister if it's really going to be scary, an options prompt pops up asking whether the player wants to shield her innocent eyes by switching off the blood in the game.
  • Human Sacrifice: Claimed to be the oni's motivation for coming after Hiroshi and the others, as well as the justification for Takuro's betrayal.
  • Infant Immortality: In the Bad Ending, Hiroshi's decision to ensure Ryan makes it out means this is upheld.. at the cost of everyone else's lives.
  • It's All My Fault: After things start going downhill, Cassey blames herself for bringing Ryan along.
  • Involuntary Group Split: In the grand tradition of Ao Oni, this happens right after the opening sequence.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: In the Normal Ending, Takuro ends up as the last one killed by the monsters, giving the other three a chance to escape.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang: Even after reuniting, Takuro suggests it might be best to stay split up because moving in larger groups might attract unwanted attention.
  • Lies to Children: While trying to avoid telling Ryan about the monsters, Hiroshi compares their situation to a game of 'Hide and Seek'.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Hiroshi really goes out of his way to keep Ryan from realizing the monsters are real.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Mika's apparent death makes Takuro decide he's okay with sacrificing the others.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Depends how you interpret everything you find in the areas only accessable on the Perfect Ending path. Does the existence of the survellience room and the Warping Corridors mean the monster doesn't have special powers, or were the distorted corridors created by its influence?
  • Mind Screw: Before finding The Warped Corridor, the player enters a room with the Mutant Oni's corpse and a bunch of roach oni corpses as well, making you wonder what exactly happened.
  • Mind Screwdriver: During the Perfect Ending, Hiroshi gains access to a room which provides a lot of information about the Mutant Oni, a survellience room, and corriders that make it easy to travel throughout the whole hospital. He also finds Takuro's watch, which explains how Takuro knew about things he wasn't around to witness.
  • Multiple Endings:
    • Normal Ending: Hiroshi, Cassey and Ryan escape, but only because the monsters successfully killed the other half of their group of friends.
    • Bad Ending: Hiroshi makes sure that Ryan gets out, and escapes with her. However, her older sister and the rest of their friends aren't so lucky..
    • Perfect Ending: While trying to escape with Ryan, Hiroshi unlocks a secret area and discovers the Warping Corridor. This helps him gather up all his friends so they can all get out together. Granted, Takuro never speaks to Hiroshi again out of jealousy that he saved Mika, but Mika herself is incredibly grateful for the rescue, Takeshi, mostly forgot about the event and never talked about it again, Ryan is alive and well, thinking the whole thing was just one big game, and Cassie and Hiroshi end up together as a couple. Though if you don't pick up Takuro's watch, The Stinger shows Takuro and Takeshi heading back to the hospital to retrieve it.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: After failing to protect Mika or Ryan before, Hiroshi can decide to redeem himself by making absolutely sure Ryan makes it out alive.
  • Never Found the Body: Mika's apparent demise leaves behind only bloodstains. When questioned about this, Hiroshi can even admit that he didn't personally witness their death.
  • Not So Different: Takuro compares their decision to make a Face–Heel Turn to Hiroshi ditching Mika and Ryan, claiming they're both doing what it takes to survive.
  • Overdrawn at the Blood Bank: On the Perfect Ending path, when Hiroshi discovers the friend who left so much blood behind, they attribute it to a nosebleed. 'I have really bad bloody noses, okay?'
  • Paint the Town Red: Unless the player switches it off, Hiroshi will find smears of blood all over the hospital.
  • Playable Epilogue: A short one follows the Perfect Ending, with Ryan playing Hide-and-Seek with Cassey.
  • Sadistic Choice: If it came down to it, would you sacrifice yourself to try and save your friends?
  • Sequel Hook: At the end of the Playable Epilogue, Ryan keeps saying she wants to return to West Nira Hospital sometime.
  • Someone Has to Die: More specifically, at least half of the 'intruders' have to die to satisfy the monsters.
  • Timed Mission: In later versions, you can actually see the clock counting down when the oni appears. (This also lets the player know when they're in the middle of an 'Infinite Chase' sequence.)
  • Tomboyish Name: Ryan, Cassey's little sister.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: After they escape together in one ending, Takuro suddenly stops talking to Hiroshi. Hiroshi suspects this is because they're upset by how they didn't personally save Mika, and they're holding a grudge over not getting to be the hero.
  • Unwinnable: In early versions, one of the items required for the Perfect Ending isn't availible. Specifically, Cassey's voodoo doll is missing.
  • Unwinnable by Design: Picking up a certain item (like a bottle of peroxide) can bar you from being able to collect other key items for the Perfect Ending later.
  • Voodoo Doll: Hiroshi can find unnervingly well-crafted dolls of himself and all his friends hidden throughout the hospital.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Cassey isn't too happy at the thought of Hiroshi leaving Ryan alone.
    • Takuro also calls Hiroshi out for letting Mika die and leaving Ryan behind.
    • Hiroshi can return the favor during the Perfect Ending path, giving Takuro grief for not letting Cassey or anyone else know about the survelliance room.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Ryan, for some reason, has bright green hair.

Nightmare
That's the Oni! But don't mind him, he's just here to watch you get freaked out.

Ao Oni has many versions, each rife with potential nightmares.

As a Moments subpage, all spoilers are unmarked. You have been warned.

  • The Oni's face is straight out of the Uncanny Valley, easily becoming a Nightmare Face that the game loves exploiting.
  • Hiding in a closet or cabinet can help shake the monster off your trail.. but also forces you to sit in complete darkness, listening to its heavy breathing as it stands right outside. If you're lucky, you'll eventually hear it open the door and leave.. Sometimes, though, in Version 5, it likes to wait, just to see if it can't fake you out. Getting into a wardrobe while it's in the room? Bad idea.
    • Even better is that in one version sometimes while you're hiding in the closet it sounds the door while still in the room. Better hope it actually left when you poke your head out..
  • The jail cutscenes. Sure, the Oni can't get through a locked door.. but it can stare you down while shaking the bars. Oh, by the way? Not all jail cells lock. So you might close a barred door and think you're safe, only to have the monster push on through..
  • The final cutscene of the first version. Hiroshi, Kazuya and Megumi escape up the well, then go to untie the rope so that the Oni can't follow. The Oni tries to follow by clawing its way up barehanded.
  • Advertisement:
  • The Oni's special ways of Leaning on the Fourth Wall. Mainly, its tendency to hide behind text boxes. In version 6, it manages to invade the inventory screen, too.
  • Version 5 includes what appears at first to be a Flashback explaining how Takeshi ended up hiding in the wardrobe at the start. It's not. And the Oni's grinning when it busts the door open, exposing a mouth full of jagged teeth..
  • Ao Oni is, like Yume Nikki, a Japanese RPG made by a non-professional. It's a horror game where the hero, Hiroshi and three of his friends gets into an abandoned manor, only to be hunted down by the monster who lives here. With the classical horror-game scenario and the amateurish look of the game, it may not sound and look so creepy. Then you start playing the game.. and quickly learn to lock the door every time you enter in a room because the monster (or 'Blue Demon' as the title says) can enter in and well.. Game Over screen. At the end, Hiroshi runs successfully out of the house.. AND IT STILL FOLLOWS YOU OUTSIDE TO GET YOU.
    • Moreover, when being chased by the titular monster there is a reason that the screen blacks out when hiding in the closet and if you fail to lock the door, leaving the closet may get you spotted by the monster and hiding back in the closet is a bad move because the monster would open the closet and it's Game Over. The overall silence is very unsettling after a few encounters. You can tell when you encountered the monster and you never know what to expect; not only does one encounter happen inside a closet, the oni can also hide behind the chat boxes.
    • Advertisement:
    • One appeared inside your pause menu. Whoever said that was the ONLY Oni? There is one doing Hindu Squats? At least, until you realize that the mat there is Mika.
  • In version 6 getting killed by the Oni turns you into an Oni as well. This results in some horrifying moments as your friends turn out to be monstrosities in disguise.
    • The Blockman Oni that appears late in the game. Not only does it come completely out of nowhere, but it also likes to charge forward, forcing you to move to the side of it to avoid it. And if you think that you can just go back into the house to avoid it, one of the other Onis appears from the house, cutting you off.
  • The Oni's design in the movie. It looks seriously scarred and deformed.
    • While it can be Narmy to some, the oni himself in the films can be quite frightening to others, if not only because it's made very apparent that he deeply enjoys hunting and killing. In the first, he uses Voice Changeling twice in the film, both in a mocking sense - especially the first. He pretends to be Mika as he claws through a door, before deciding to mock and laugh at Shun in his own voice. In the sequel, he says not a word, but his glee is made apparent by the numerous Slasher Smiles he makes throughout the film.
  • Very late in Version 6, you will enter a large room, only to be greeted by a very large group of very deformed Onis, all horrifying in their own way (ranging from a blue mass covered in eyes, to the aforementioned blockman). Oh, and they leave the jail cell they're in and come after you. And the door locks itself behind you. When you do eventually leave, re-entering will reveal that they've all gone.
