It was made in 1961. That's the year mine was made with the sameformat, and I have the original dated sales receipt and paperworkfrom Browning.

The number preceeding the L in the serial number denoted theyear, but there was no letter preceeding it in 1961. EX: Serialnumber 2L XXXX was mfg. in 1962, 3LXXXX in 1963, etc.

Those made in 1959 had the same system at 9L XXXX, but thosemfg. in 1969 changed format to XXXX 9L and followed that formatthrough the end of their manufacture. I don't know what they did in1960, but I assume it was 0L XXXX.

The examples I've given have 4 digits following or preceedingthe date, but I believe they went to 5 digits by the mid 60s. Justwhat I've noticed from those I've seen.

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “BROWNING ARMS COMPANY”. The left side of the barrel at the receiver is marked with a crown over 'R', star over 'K', lion over 'P.V.' and crowned 'E / LG' in oval Leige proof mark. The left side of the chamber ring is marked with the star over 'K' and lion over 'P.V.' as well as the Tower of Leige proof mark. The right side of the barrel is marked “CALIBER .300 WIN. MAG. ONLY / MADE IN BELGIUM” and at the chamber with the serial numnber. The underside of the bolt handle is stamped with “25669” and the outside top of the bolt handle is marked with a lion over 'PV” proof. The magazine floorplate and trigger guard are engraved and gold filled.
Barrel Length: The stepped heavy barrel is 24” in length.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass bead dovetailed into a hood, serrated, ramped base at the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a “U” notched folding leaf sight dovetailed to a base screwed into the top of the barrel and screw adjustable for elevation. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for mounting a scope.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut with a high-gloss lacquered finish. It has a pistol grip, Monte Carlo comb with cheekpiece, and a vented brown rubber recoil pad marked “BROWNING” with white and black spacers. The forend has a smooth rounded nosecap of a slightly lighter wood and there are sling studs in the underside of the forend and in the belly. The nose cap has a mar on the front and on the left side. The stock has several scattered light compressions, scuffs and drag-lines with small compressions of moderate depth on the left below the chamber ring, on the right between the bolt handle and ejecection port and on the right below the chamber. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering shows very light wear with a small mar on the bottom-front corner of the right wrist checkering. The lacquer is starting to crack with age. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad. The recoil pad has hardened some but shows minimal wear. The pad is in about Fine condition. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: The rifle is blued. The alloy trigger guard and magazine floorplate have a glossy black finish and engraving that is gold filled. The bolt handle and bolt are brightly polished and “In The White”.
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. Our bore gauge measures a ME of about 1.75.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. TheThe front sight base has a few small marks on its edges, the muzzle has light thinning as do the edges of the rear sight base and receiver. The barrel at the chamber and the chamber ring have some very light scattered freckling. The unfinished bolt body, extractor, handle and sleeve have very light scattered frosting. The alloy floorplate and trigger guard assembly have thinning at their edges and scattered light wear which does not go through the finish. The screw slots are sharp and the markings are crisp with the exception of a couple of the proof marks which are lightly struck. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good-plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. There is a manual safety on the right rear of the receiver. As with all firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a FN Browning High Power Safari Grade bolt action rifle chambered in .300 Win. Mag. and manufactured in 1964. The rifle has a checkered walnut stock with pistol grip, Monte Carlo comb and cheekpiece, and the magazine floorplate and trigger guard are engraved and gold filled. This is a nice looking rifle with its bright blue and high gloss lacquered finishes. Built by FN on a Mauser-style action, it is quite strong and will likely provide several lifetimes of use if properly maintained. This example was made prior to Browning's salt-wood problem, so there is no worry about the wood eroding the metal as there would be with one produced just a few years later. The .300 Win Mag cartridge is a belted magnum developed to compete with Remington's 7mm Magnum and compete it does. It is a popular round for larger or tougher game animals with good long-range performance, as found by the many military and law enforcement snipers and marksmen who use this round. This is a quality vintage gun in a quality caliber, equally suited to long range precision or hunting and would make a good addition to any safe. Please see our photos and good luck!
